St. Gregory the Theologian (also known as St. Gregory of Nazianzus, c. 329–389 A.D.) was a 4th-century Church Father and one of the Cappadocian Fathers, celebrated as one of Christianity’s greatest defenders of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Born into a devout Christian family in Cappadocia, he received an elite secular education and studied rhetoric in Athens, where he formed a profound lifelong friendship with St. Basil the Great. Though Gregory deeply desired a quiet life of monastic contemplation, prayer, and writing, he was repeatedly called into active ecclesiastical service, reluctantly becoming a priest and later a bishop. His most pivotal work occurred in Constantinople, where his masterful preaching and unmatched rhetorical skills reestablished Nicene Orthodoxy over the dominant Arian heresy and culminated in his leadership during the Second Ecumenical Council in 381 A.D.. Seeking peace amidst ongoing political and ecclesiastical divisions, he resigned from his post and spent his remaining years in quiet retirement in his hometown, leaving behind an influential corpus of theological orations, letters, and poetry. He is venerated as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs along with St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom.
