St. Basil the Great (329–379 AD) was an influential 4th-century Church Father, theologian, and the Bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia. Born into a wealthy, deeply religious family of future saints, he received an elite classical education in Constantinople and Athens. Guided by his sister Macrina, Basil abandoned a career in rhetoric to embrace an ascetic path, traveling among desert hermits before writing foundational monastic rules that still govern Eastern Christian monasticism today. As bishop, he famously defended Orthodox Christian theology against the Arian heresy. Known for his deep compassion, he established the "Basiliad"—history's first public hospital complex that provided free medical care, a trade school, and food shelter to the poor and travelers. He is venerated as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs along with St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian.
