Saint Clair of Normandy was a 9th-century English-born monk, hermit, and martyr whose virtuous life left a lasting imprint on French religious history. Born into a noble family in Kent, England around 845 AD, he fled his homeland to escape a prearranged marriage. Seeking a life entirely dedicated to God, he crossed the English Channel to Neustria (modern-day Normandy) with his faithful companion, Saint Cyrinus. He was ordained a priest in 870 AD by the Bishop of Coutances and lived a rigorous, ascetic life as a wandering hermit in the forests, gaining a widespread reputation as a spiritual guide and wonderworker who healed the sick. A woman who had a demonically inspired desire for the saint tracked him down, sending two assassins who beheaded him in 884 AD at his hermitage near the River Epte. According to pious tradition, Saint Clair became a cephalophore, picking up his own severed head to carry it to his place of burial. His martyrdom site became the town of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte—famous as the location where the historic 911 AD treaty was signed with the Viking leader Rollo to establish the Duchy of Normandy.
