St. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407) was an eminent Church Father, biblical interpreter, and Archbishop of Constantinople whose legendary eloquence earned him the Greek surname Chrysostomos, meaning "golden-mouthed". Raised in Antioch by a devout widowed mother, he received a world-class education in rhetoric from the pagan master Libanius before dedicating his life to Christ. After spending years practicing rigorous monastic asceticism in the desert, his failing health forced him back to the city, where he was ordained a priest in 386 and gained immense popularity for his fiery, practical sermons. Against his wishes, he was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople in 398, a position he used to reform the clergy, fund hospitals, and champion the poor. However, his uncompromising moral stances and public denunciation of imperial extravagance quickly drew the wrath of Empress Eudoxia and political rivals, who successfully conspired to have him deposed and banished. He died in exile en route to the Black Sea, famously uttering the words, "Glory to God for all things," leaving behind an monumental legacy that includes his vast collection of homilies and the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which remains the primary Eucharistic service utilized by the Orthodox Church today. He is venerated as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs along with St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian .
