About St. Walburga of Heidenheim

Saint Walburga (c. 710–779 AD) was an Anglo-Saxon missionary, abbess, and saint who played a pivotal role in the Christianization of 8th-century Germany.

Born into a noble family in Devon, England, she was educated at Wimborne Abbey before traveling to Germany at the request of her uncle, Saint Boniface, to assist in his evangelical mission. She eventually settled in Bavaria and became the abbess of the double monastery of Heidenheim, successfully governing both monks and nuns while becoming widely renowned for her skills in healing, literacy, and medicine.

Following her death, her relics were translated to Eichstätt, where a miraculous, clear healing oil—known as Saint Walburga’s Oil—began to exude from her tomb.
