About St. Seraphim of Sarov

St. Seraphim of Sarov (1754–1833) is one of the most beloved and well known spiritual elders (staretz) in the history of the Russian Church. Born Prochor Moshnin to a merchant family in Kursk, he joined the Sarov Monastery at a young age, dedicating himself to extreme asceticism, intense prayer, and absolute silence.

His devotion culminated in spending 1,000 successive nights praying on a rock with his hands raised to heaven. Following decades of complete isolation, during which he survived a brutal attack by thieves that left him permanently hunched, he opened his monastic cell to the public as a spiritual director.

Renowned for his gifts of healing, prophecy, and profound joy, he famously greeted every visitor with the words, "My joy, Christ is risen!" His spiritual legacy is defined by his explanations on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, which he described as the true goal of the Christian life.
