About St. Hieronymus of Aegina

St. Hieronymus (Ieronymos) of Aegina (born Basil Apostolides, 1883–1966) was a highly revered 20th-century Greek Orthodox elder, monk, and wonderworker. Born in the Christian community of Cappadocia under Ottoman rule, he was ordained a deacon and initially served with distinction in Constantinople, where he was remembered for his holiness and majestic liturgical voice.

Following the tumultuous 1922 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, he was uprooted as a refugee and settled on the island of Aegina, where he was eventually ordained a priest and tonsured a monk. He chose a life of strict, quiet asceticism as a monastic hermit but served extensively as a hospital chaplain and a deeply compassionate spiritual father.

Renowned for his extraordinary spiritual gifts—including clairvoyance, soul-healing, and reading hidden thoughts—he became a beacon of peace, humility, and love for thousands of pilgrims until his repose in 1966.
