About St. Ephraim the Syrian

Saint Ephraim the Syrian (c. 306 – 373 AD) is one of the most beloved saints, deacons, and Venerable Fathers of the Orthodox Church. Born in Nisibis, he was baptized as a youth and became a disciple of St. James of Nisibis, fleeing to Edessa later in life where he embraced a strict ascetic path as a monk.

Driven by a spirit of profound repentance and humility, St. Ephraim famously feigned madness to escape being consecrated as a bishop, choosing instead to remain a deacon and a servant to the people. He was a champion of the Orthodox faith, using his God-given poetic genius to compose hundreds of hymns and metrical homilies that combated rampant heresies and beautifully articulated the mysteries of the Holy Trinity and the Incarnation.

His enduring legacy is woven into the very heart of Orthodox liturgical life, most notably through the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim, which is prayed continuously by the faithful during Great Lent as a foundational guide for spiritual warfare, humility, and repentance.
