About Saint Philaret of New York

Saint Philaret of New York (1903–1985), born George Nikolaevich Voznesensky, was a revered Orthodox hierarch who served as the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) from 1964 until his death. Born into a devout priestly family in Kursk, Russia, he and his family fled the Bolshevik Revolution in 1920 to settle in Harbin, Manchuria (China), where he trained as an electrical engineer before taking monastic vows and being ordained a priest in 1931. For decades, Father Philaret ministered courageously to Russian refugees under harsh Japanese occupation and subsequent Communist Chinese rule, adamantly refusing to recognize the Soviet-controlled Moscow Patriarchate. After escaping to Australia in 1962 and being consecrated as a bishop, he was unexpectedly chosen as the youngest candidate to lead ROCOR from its headquarters in New York City, where he became a globetrotting, zealous confessor of traditional Orthodoxy, an inspiring preacher, and a fierce opponent of ecumenism. Remembered for his profound asceticism, deep prayer life, and an unyielding loyalty to the traditions of the Church, his sanctitiy before God was confirmed when his tomb at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville was opened in 1998 to reveal his relics completely incorrupt.
