Saint Joasaph of Edmonton (born Ivan Skorodumov) was an Orthodox missionary bishop who became revered as the "Enlightener of Canada" for his tireless apostolic work across the Canadian prairies. Born in Russia in 1888, he was tonsured a monk and ordained a priest before fleeing the chaos of the Bolshevik Revolution. He arrived in Montreal in 1930 nearly penniless and was consecrated a bishop six months later, eventually being assigned to the new diocesan center of Edmonton in 1936 to oversee Western Canada. Known for his deep humility, extreme poverty, and joyful spirit, Vladyka Joasaph frequently traveled across Alberta by foot, wagon, and train—often carrying heavy suitcases of liturgical items for miles—to establish a cathedral, a monastery, and over 40 rural parishes. In 1951, despite failing health, he was elevated to Archbishop and transferred to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent his final years continuing his missionary endeavors before reposing on November 26, 1955. His legacy of self-sacrifice and spiritual miracles led to his formal glorification (canonization) as an Orthodox saint in 2024.
