St. Theophan the Recluse (1815–1894), born George Govorov, was a profound Russian Orthodox bishop, theologian, and ascetic scholar who became one of the most influential spiritual writers of the 19th century. After receiving a theological education at the Kiev Theological Academy, he took monastic vows, served with the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, and was later consecrated as a bishop, serving the dioceses of Tambov and Vladimir. However, deeply yearning for a life dedicated entirely to quietude and unceasing prayer, he retired from his episcopal duties in 1866 and entered the Vysha Hermitage, embarking on a strict, 22-year period of total reclusion starting in 1872. Within his secluded cell, he built a private chapel to celebrate the Divine Liturgy daily, practiced iconography, and wrote extensively. Though physically isolated, he maintained a spiritual connection to the outside world, answering many letters a day from struggling believers and translating monumental spiritual texts—most notably translating the Philokalia into Russian—leaving behind a vast, accessible legacy on the mechanics of Christian salvation and inner prayer.
