Saint Ignatius the Godbearer, also known as Ignatius of Antioch, was an early Christian bishop and one of the prominent Apostolic Fathers who directly studied under the Apostle John. Serving as the third bishop of Antioch—the historic city where the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians"—he earned the title "Godbearer" (Theophorus) because he unceasingly bore God in his heart and prayer, and through a beloved tradition identifying him as the small child Jesus once held in His arms. Around 107 AD, during the persecutions of Emperor Trajan, Ignatius was arrested and escorted in chains by Roman soldiers on a long journey to Rome for execution. Along this route, he penned seven landmark theological letters to various congregations, Articulating early Christian doctrines on church unity, the hierarchy of bishops, and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. He steadfastly refused all rescue attempts from local Christians, famously declaring himself "the wheat of God" who wished to be ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread, a fate fulfilled when he was thrown to the lions in the Roman arena.
