About St. Abundius of Rome

Saint Abundius the Priest lived in Rome during the dawn of the fourth century, serving the Church during the brutal persecutions unleashed by Emperor Diocletian. Known for his unwavering faith and holy life, he was arrested alongside his faithful deacon, Abundantius, and 23 others, for refusing to deny Christ and sacrifice to the pagan idols.

The 23 were martyred straight away, but St. Abundius and his deacon were kept in the Mamertine prison for over a month. While being led by imperial soldiers toward their place of execution, the holy martyrs encountered a grief-stricken pagan man named Marcian. He was carrying the lifeless body of his young son, John, who had just died. Filled with divine compassion, Saint Abundius knelt on the road, lifted his heart in fervent prayer, and called upon the name of Christ. To the absolute astonishment of the soldiers and the crowd, the young boy opened his eyes and was miraculously raised back to life.

Witnessing this profound display of God's power, Marcian and his resurrected son immediately confessed Christ, shedding their pagan beliefs on the spot. They were baptized into the true faith right there on the road. Enraged by this sudden conversion, the imperial judge ordered all four of them to be taken to the place of execution, where Saint Abundius, Abundantius, Marcian, and John were all beheaded, joyfully surrendering their souls to God and receiving the immortal crowns of martyrdom.

St. Abundius is commemorated on September 16th which marks the day of his martyrdom.
