Saint Parthenios of Chios (1815–1883) was a Greek Orthodox monk and ascetic renowned for his spiritual gifts and miracles on the island of Chios. Born Polydoros Frangoskoufis in the village of Dafnonas, his birth was famously prophesied by Saint Makarios of Corinth, who foretold that he would become a monk and save many souls. Originally a tradesman engaged in commerce between Chios, Smyrna, and Constantinople, he renounced the world and entered Nea Moni Monastery after the sudden, tragic death of his fiancée. Seeking deeper solitude, he eventually moved to a cave on Mount Penthodos, where he lived an austere life of rigorous fasting, vigil, and prayer. Granted the spiritual gift of foresight, he famously predicted the catastrophic 1881 Chios earthquake. As his holiness drew crowds from across the island, his remote mountain retreat transformed into a thriving monastic Skete. He peacefully reposed on December 8, 1883, leaving behind a lasting legacy of profound spiritual counseling and miraculous healings.
