About St. Herbert

Saint Herbert of Derwentwater was a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon priest and anchorite who famously lived a life of solitary devotion on a tiny island in Lake Derwentwater, located in Cumbria, England. A close friend and disciple of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, Herbert lived in absolute seclusion, sustaining himself on fish and homegrown vegetables while dedicating his days to intense prayer.

Once a year, he journeyed to visit Cuthbert for spiritual guidance. During their final meeting in Carlisle in AD 686, Cuthbert revealed that his own death was imminent. Deeply grieved, Herbert fell to his feet and prayed that God would grant them the grace to pass into heaven at the exact same moment.

After returning to his isolated hermitage, Herbert contracted a long, purifying illness, and his prayer was fulfilled when both saints died on the exact same day, March 20, 687. Today, the island bears his name, and the ruins of his stone cell remain a local pilgrimage site.
