About St. Boisil of Melrose

Saint Boisil of Melrose (also known as Saint Boswell) was a seventh-century Northumbrian monk and priest renowned for his profound virtue, scholarly knowledge of the Scriptures, and prophetic gifts.

Originally trained under Saint Aidan at Lindisfarne, he moved to the newly founded monastery of Old Melrose in the late 640s, where he served as prior under Abbot Eata before later succeeding him as superior. Chronicled heavily by the Venerable Bede, Boisil is most famous for being the spiritual mentor and teacher of Saint Cuthbert, whom he famously welcomed at the abbey gates in 651 after intuitively recognizing the young man's future holiness.

During his final years, Boisil successfully predicted a devastating regional plague, accurately foretelling that Cuthbert would survive the pestilence while he himself would succumb to it. On his deathbed in 664, Boisil spent his final seven days reading the Gospel of John in seven parts with Cuthbert, using his final breaths to prophesy that his beloved pupil would eventually become a great bishop.
