St. Glicherie of Romania (born Gheorghe Tănase, 1891–1985) was a 20th-century Orthodox metropolitan, confessor, and leader of the Old Calendar Orthodox Church of Romania. Orphaned at a young age, he embraced the monastic life and was tonsured at Cetățuia Monastery, later becoming the abbot of the Prokof Skete. His life took a defining turn in 1924 when the Romanian Church adopted the Gregorian calendar; refusing what he viewed as an uncanonical innovation, Father Glicherie chose exile and led a staunch resistance to preserve the traditional patristic calendar. For decades, he endured extreme state and ecclesiastical persecution, frequent police raids, hiding in freezing forests, and multiple terms of imprisonment. Despite these hardships, he persevered, helped rebuild numerous parishes, and was secretly consecrated as a bishop under house arrest. In 1957, he became the first Metropolitan of the True Orthodox Church of Romania. He guided his flock with deep humility and spiritual endurance until his peaceful repose at the age of 94, and was officially glorified as a saint in 1999.
