About St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne

Saint Cuthbert (c. 634–687) was a prominent Anglo-Saxon monk, bishop, and hermit who became one of medieval England's most revered saints. Originally a Northumbrian shepherd, he entered Melrose Abbey after witnessing a vision of angels, later becoming the prior of Lindisfarne where he helped transition the local church from Celtic to Roman traditions.

Driven by a desire for solitary prayer, he lived for years as a strict hermit on the isolated Inner Farne island. Though he reluctantly left seclusion to serve as the Bishop of Lindisfarne in 685, he returned to his island hermitage shortly before his death in 687. When his body was later discovered to be completely incorrupt, his shrine became a major destination for medieval pilgrims, eventually finding a permanent home at Durham Cathedral.
