About St. Bridget of Kildare

Saint Bridget of Kildare, Equal-to-the-Apostles (c. 451–525), is one of the most beloved saints of the pre-Schism Western Orthodox Church and, alongside Saint Patrick, a primary patron of Ireland.

Born to a Christian slave mother and a pagan chieftain, she was renowned from childhood for her boundless compassion, selling her possessions to feed the poor and healing the sick through her prayers. Resisting marriage to dedicate herself wholly to Christ, she received the monastic veil from Saint Mel and subsequently founded the famous monastery of Kildare, a unique double monastery for both monks and nuns.

As its Abbess, Saint Bridget established a major spiritual and cultural center famed for its hospitality, illuminating the British Isles with the radiance of Celtic Orthodox monasticism before her blessed repose in 525.
