About St. Onuphrius

Saint Onuphrius the Great was a wondrous 4th-century anchorite who illuminated the Egyptian desert through a life of extreme, otherworldly asceticism.

Initially a monk in a coenobitic monastery within the Thebaid, he was guided by his guardian angel into the innermost wilderness to emulate the solitary struggles of the Prophet Elijah and Saint John the Baptist. For over sixty years, Saint Onuphrius dwelt in total solitude, braving intense cold, heat, and severe demonic temptations, completely sustained by divine providence via a nearby date palm, a freshwater spring, and the Holy Eucharist brought to him by an angel each Sunday.

Clothed only in his long, snow-white hair and a loincloth of desert leaves, his unearthly visage was discovered by Saint Paphnutius, whom God had sent to witness and record the Great Elder's final hours before his blessed repose around 400 AD.
