Saint Juvenaly of Alaska (1761–1796) was a Russian Orthodox hieromonk and the Protomartyr of America, recognized as the first Christian martyr of the New World. Born in Siberia, he originally trained as a mining engineer and served as a military officer before dedicating his life to God. Following the tragic death of his wife, he entered monasticism at St. Petersburg and later joined the renowned Valaam Monastery. In 1793, driven by a deep apostolic zeal, he volunteered for the historic first Orthodox missionary expedition to Russian America, trekking thousands of miles across Russia to arrive at Kodiak Island in 1794. Alongside saints such as Herman of Alaska, he successfully baptized thousands of indigenous Alaskans. In 1796, while evangelizing the Yupik Eskimos alone on the mainland near Kuinerrak, he was attacked and killed, sealing his lifelong devotion to the Gospel with a martyr's crown.
